Celebrating 40 years

The Foundation donated $1 million above our annual grantmaking to honor Tufts Health Plan’s 40th anniversary, recognize community organizations making a difference.

To celebrate Tufts Health Plan's four decades serving members, the Foundation donated an additional $1 million to New England nonprofits. Forty grants were distributed to community organizations; 10 in each state where Tufts Health Plan serves members.

For us, this marked a proud milestone in an ongoing tradition of giving. A $25,000 angel grant could mean all sorts of new beginnings – from critical resources for a new pilot program to new relationships in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island that reinforce our commitment to making our communities better places.

“We recognize that non-profit organizations play a crucial role in building stronger and healthier communities for all of us,” said Tom Croswell, president and CEO of Tufts Health Plan. “These angel grants are a way of saying ‘thank you’ to those addressing the economic and social conditions that influence the health of our diverse communities.”

The grants support 40+ nonprofits working to address the social determinants of health.

Because health happens where we live, work, grow and play, the angel grants support a range of nonprofits doing work on a variety of vital issues, including access to affordable quality housing and healthy food, assistance for children and families, and ensuring a complete count in the upcoming U.S. Census. (Census data are used to determine the distribution of federal funds, grants and support to states, counties and communities.)

Through this one-time-only funding, the Foundation was able to support and surprise the community organizations. Representatives expressed gratitude, shock, disbelief and joy – sometimes all at the same time.

Tufts Health Plan Foundation has given more than $36 million to community organizations since 2008 and awarded nearly $5 million in community grants in 2019. View the complete list of 40th anniversary grantees here.
